Motivational Interviewing in HIV Care 2.0 (In-Person - Richmond)

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of "Introduction to Motivational Interviewing"  and a one-on-one client simulation are required prior to being admitted into this course.    For more information about this requirement, please email Emily.Cadden@vcuhealth.org

Course Description: 

This course will cover intermediate MI concepts and practices via didactics, case discussion, and demonstrations/practice. The training will be highly interactive and participants will receive real-time feedback on MI skills.

Learning objectives:
Participants will:

  1. Develop a working knowledge of MI concepts and practices

  2. Understand the key issues in evoking client motivation to change

  3. Develop awareness and basic skills in using broader MI counseling strategies

  4. Be able to use key MI communication techniques OARS

  5. Understand the four processes of MI – engaging, focusing, evoking and planning

  6. Experience/observe MI counseling practice

Course Eligibility:

This program is being offered at no cost through funding from the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (MAAETC)  and the Virginia HIV/AIDS Resource and Consultation Center (VHARCC).  As such, priority will be given to those funded under Ryan White, CDC, VDH, and HRSA funding to provide Case Management Services to people living with HIV/AIDS.   If you are not funded under such grants, your registration for this class may be rejected.  For any questions regarding course eligibility, please email emily.cadden@vcuhealth.org

Doctors, Dentists, Social Workers, Nurses, Advance Practice Practitioners, Pharmacists, Case Managers, Mental Health and Substance Use Professionals in HIV Care, DIS, EIS, Status Neutral Navigators
