Course Description
This program will provide basic training in health insurance basics, Medicare/Medicaid & Medicaid Expansion, and SSI/SSDI/SOAR programs. This program provides a basic overview of TANF, SNAP, and similar social welfare programs, housing services including HOPWA and other programs, and an overview of VAMAP (Formerly ADAP)
This program is designed for eligibility specialists, medical and non-medical case managers, housing case managers, CHARLI case managers, patient navigators, community health workers, nurses, and support staff who assist clients in navigating social welfare programs. Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
Correctly identify clients who may be eligible for Medicaid in Virginia and ways to enroll clients
Define TANF, SNAP, WIC, and other programs
Explain differences in eligibility and enrollment processes for housing programs
Define eligibility criteria and application procedure for the four VAMAP programs available in Virginia
Explain the differences between SSI & SSDI
Identify what type of clients are appropriate for the SOAR program and where to find additional services for SOAR
Correctly name the various parts of Medicare, what's covered by each type, enrollment processes, and guidelines, as well as resources for helping to pay for Medicare.

The Facts is a hybrid course that provides information concerning the spectrum of HIV disease, HIV antibody testing, and developments in rapid testing, legal issues, disclosure assistance (partner counseling and referral services), and prevention. This course will be delivered using synchronous and asynchronous modalities. Session 1 will be at the time listed above during a synchronous virtual session. Then you will be provided links to the VA Train system to complete online learning modules.

Richmond, VAThe Motivational Interviewing (MI) training program is designed to provide MI training to anyone working with people with or at risk of HIV/AIDS throughout the state of Virginia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of MI, the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and how to identify and elicit change talk with clients. The trainings will provide an opportunity to learn and practice MI skills, followed by a demonstration of the student’s proficiency in MI skills.
Course Objectives:
Understand the history and development of MI.
Define ambivalence and describe the role it plays in client behavior.
Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.
Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).
Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.
Course Delivery & Requirements
This course is will be provided in person using didactic and interactive teaching modalities. After successful completion of this course, participants will be given the opportunity to participate in a web-based, one on one client simulation where they can demonstrate skills to trainers and receive feedback. The Fundamentals of Prevention Counseling is a one-day course that provides guidelines and skill-building opportunities for professionals who implement prevention counseling and HIV antibody testing. This workshop incorporates recommendations and strategies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for personalizing prevention counseling sessions before and after testing for HIV. The Facts course is a prerequisite for this course.
UPON COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, THE PARTICIPANT WILL BE ABLE TO:
Identify strategies to support clients in making behavior changes that will reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV
Demonstrate through practice sessions the six steps of prevention counseling
Support the client in making a decision about testing and preparing for the result
Assist the client who tests to begin to integrate the result emotionally, behaviorally, and socially

The Fundamentals of Waived Rapid HIV Testing course is a 1 and 1/2 day class that teaches participants how to run CLIA-waived rapid HIV tests. Attendance at both days is required. Pre-requisites for this course include the following:
Successful completion of "The Facts" course within the past two years.
Successful completion of "The Fundamentals of Prevention Counseling" course within the past year.
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
Demonstrate safe work practices
Identify the QA steps required before, during, and after rapid HIV testing
List the steps of the HIV prevention counseling protocol in conducting the rapid HIV test
Perform and interpret a waived rapid HIV test correctly
Demonstrate finger sticking and sample collection
Demonstrate the integration of HIV counseling into the rapid testing process.

Course Description:
This course will cover intermediate MI concepts and practices via didactics, case discussion, and demonstrations/practice. The training will be highly interactive and participants will receive real-time feedback on MI skills.
Learning objectives:Participants will:
Develop a working knowledge of MI concepts and practices
Understand the key issues in evoking client motivation to change
Develop awareness and basic skills in using broader MI counseling strategies
Be able to use key MI communication techniques OARS
Understand the four processes of MI – engaging, focusing, evoking and planning
Experience/observe MI counseling practice
