Introduction to Motivational Interviewing in HIV Prevention and Care Settings (In-Person - Richmond, VA)

Course Description:

The Motivational Interviewing (MI) training program is designed to provide MI training to anyone working with people with or at risk of HIV/AIDS throughout the state of Virginia. Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations of MI, the role of ambivalence in behavior change, basic MI skills, and how to identify and elicit change talk with clients. The trainings will provide an opportunity to learn and practice MI skills, followed by a demonstration of the student’s proficiency in MI skills.

Course Objectives:

  1. Understand the history and development of MI.

  2. Define ambivalence and describe the role it plays in client behavior.

  3. Describe the spirit of MI and guiding principles.

  4. Demonstrate proficiency in basic MI skills (e.g., OARS).

  5. Identify and cultivate change talk in interactions with clients.

Course Delivery & Requirements

This course is will be provided in person using didactic and interactive teaching modalities.  After successful completion of this course, participants will be given the opportunity to participate in a web-based, one on one client simulation where they can demonstrate skills to trainers and receive feedback.  For questions regarding the dates, times, and location of training opportunities,  please email emily.cadden@vcuhealth.org.  For questions regarding VDH requirements, please contact your contract monitor.

Course Eligibility:

This program is being offered at no cost through funding from the MidAtlantic AIDS Education and Training Center (MAAETC)  and the Virginia Department of Health.  As such,  priority will be given to those funded under Ryan White, CDC, VDH, and HRSA funding to provide Case Management Services to people with HIV/AIDS. If you are not funded under such grants, your registration for this class may be rejected.  For any questions regarding course eligibility please email emily.cadden@vcuhealth.org

Certificate of Completion:

A certificate of completion will be provided to all attendees indicating 6.5 hours of attendance.
