Course Description: 

This course will cover intermediate MI concepts and practices via didactics, case discussion, and demonstrations/practice. The training will be highly interactive and participants will receive real-time feedback on MI skills.

Learning objectives: Participants will:

  1. Develop a working knowledge of MI concepts and practices

  2. Understand the key issues in evoking client motivation to change

  3. Develop awareness and basic skills in using broader MI counseling strategies

  4. Be able to use key MI communication techniques OARS

  5. Understand the four processes of MI – engaging, focusing, evoking and planning

  6. Experience/observe MI counseling practice

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of "Introduction to Motivational Interviewing"  and a one-on-one client simulation are required prior to being admitted into this course.    For more information about this requirement, please email Emily.Cadden@vcuhealth.org.
